湿気が少なくて朝晩は涼しい。日中の暑さも木陰に入れば届いてこない。梅雨とは思えない不快指数の低さだ。そんな中で、今年はじめてセミの声を聞いた。アブラゼミだった。ぼくが近づくと声をひそめて警戒してるようだったけど、もう蝉捕り少年って歳でもないからそれには及ばないぜ。
確かにアブラゼミには申し訳ない思い出がたくさんある。いったいぼくは何匹のアブラゼミを殺してきたのだろう？ 想像もつかない。
子供のころは毎年かならずオオカマキリを飼っていた。餌はもちろん生餌じゃないといけないので、毎日カマキリの餌をとるために虫網を持って出かけた。セミの中でも割と鈍感なアブラゼミは捕りやすいんで、カマキリを入れた水槽にはいつもアブラゼミがひしめいていた。
ちなみに、セミのオスは腹が全部声を響かせるための空洞になっていて身が少ないので、なるべくメスを見つけて捕るようにするのがカマキリへの思いやりなんである。こうしてぼくは思いやりの心を身につけていったわけなのだな。
不幸とか、あるいは災いと言われるものの多くは、人間が怠けていて、目的を正しく知らないか、知っていても、それに向かって真剣に努力しないから起こるのだ。そういう人たちは、塔を建てることができるし、建てなければならないと思いながら、その基礎に、小屋の土台くらいの石材や労力しか使わない人のように思える。……そういうことなのだった。しかし、こういう言葉で奮起できるような心性すら失ってしまったような気がする。とりあえず、今日はもう寝ることにしようと思う。睡眠不足や日中の眠気が心身の健康に影響を及ぼすとか書かれてしまうとね。
